Sterling silver is made to be worn — and with a few simple habits it stays bright for decades. This guide from the Silver Ocean atelier in Junagadh answers the questions we hear most about caring for 925 silver jewellery.
Why does silver tarnish or turn black?
Tarnish is a natural reaction between silver and sulphur in the air, sweat, perfume and humidity. It is not a defect and does not mean your piece is fake — genuine 925 sterling silver tarnishes; many fake "silver" alloys do not. Tarnish sits on the surface and polishes away easily.
How do I clean silver jewellery at home?
- Daily: after wearing, wipe gently with the silver polishing cloth included in every Silver Ocean order.
- Light tarnish: wash in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, rub softly with fingertips, rinse and dry completely with a soft cloth.
- Heavier tarnish: use a dedicated silver-polish cloth or bring your piece to our Junagadh store — cleaning is complimentary for Silver Ocean jewellery.
Avoid toothpaste, baking soda scrubs and harsh chemicals — they scratch the surface and damage oxidised or plated finishes. For pieces with pearls, mother of pearl or gemstones, use only the dry-cloth method.
How should I store silver jewellery?
- Store each piece separately in the pouch provided, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
- Close ziplock pouches with as little air as possible — less air, less tarnish.
- Keep a small silica gel sachet in your jewellery box during monsoon months.
When should I take silver jewellery off?
Put jewellery on last — after perfume, lotion and hairspray — and remove it before swimming, bathing, workouts and household cleaning. Chlorine and sweat are the fastest routes to tarnish.
Quick answer
To keep 925 silver bright: wipe after every wear, store airtight and dry, keep it away from perfume and water, and polish gently when needed. That is the entire routine.
